FORTUNE gave extra points this year to organizations that were successfully managing the economic downturn.

No News Is Good News at the New York Motorcycle Show
January 31, 2010 by · Leave a Comment
Expectations weren’t exactly high going into the 2010 new York Cycle World International Motorcycle Show. After a year of plummeting American sales, manufacturers were not in a position to showcase flashy new products or fancy exhibits. most of the presentations at the media preview on Friday focused on products that had been revealed elsewhere. it was a distinct change from the 2009 show, when the industry had a previous-year sales boost to crow about and there were new models and concept bikes on display.
Here are some of the highlights of this year’s show:
• BMW showed off the S 1000 RR, the company’s 193-horsepower sport bike, which was first revealed last May. Up close, the bike is more angular and aggressive than its photos suggest. The company also was keen to promote its freshened-up line of Boxer-engine bikes, including its globe-trotting R 1200 GS, which has a slightly beefed-up look for 2010.
• Honda’s news conference started with the company’s new V-4 bike, the VFR1200F, but also focused on the brand’s broad range of offerings, including the SH150i scooter, which was new to the United States in 2009 but has sold well in Italy. The NT700V and Shadow RS models, while not exactly brand new, are recent arrivals that visitors may not have seen yet.
• Harley-Davidson rolled out a new variant of its 1200 Sportster, the Forty-Eight, aka the XL 1200X. Harley-Davidson also reported its first quarterly loss since 1993 on Friday. Keith Wandell, Harley’s chief executive, told The Wall Street Journal that the company was looking to expand its sales outside the United States.
• Ducati, which had one of the more complicated presentations on Friday, had only one new product to show, the Multistrada 1200, which was seen in Milan in November. Emphasizing its clothing and accessory products, the Italian company put on a fashion show for the journalists in attendance, with models parading across a platform stage on and around the Multistrada display. Nicky Hayden, who rides for Ducati in MotoGP, was there for the events, as was a (replica?) version of his bike. Hayden was in the Italian Alps just last week for the introduction of the company’s 2010 racing bikes.
• Yamaha’s Star brand emphasized its aftermarket accessory line, displaying several customized motorcycles. Yamaha itself had nothing new to show, although there is a Valentino Rossi-inspired YZF-R1 on display.
• Victory Motorcycles, which last year showed off an aggressively styled concept bike, presented a limited edition version of its Vegas model, of which only 100 will be made, the company said.
• Suzuki, which said in November that it would not be importing new street models for 2010, presented a customized Hayabusa built by Nick Anglada as part of its Busa Beats hip-hop competition.
• Zero Motorcycles did not make a presentation to the media, but the company has a (small) booth at the show for the first time. there wasn’t a lot of technical innovation on display from the major manufacturers — not a surprise in the midst of the downturn — but Zero’s presence on the floor was a small gesture toward what could eventually become a significant segment of the powersports market: electric-powered motorcycles.
The 2010 new York Cycle World International Motorcycle Show is at the Jacob Javits Center through Sunday. See motorcycleshows.com for more details.
