Harley Davidson bookings start in India

Just last year, the world’s best known cruiser bike maker, Harley Davidson, announced its foray into the Indian market.

After an agonizing six month wait, finally the company’s model range was launched at the Delhi Auto Expo in January of this year and it was an even more excruciating few months till the American bike maker finally started taking bookings for its range of twelve models here in India.

The bookings for Harley Davidson bikes can either be done online or through the five appointed company dealers in Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Hyderabad and Bangalore. And the twelve models available in India, a part of five Harley Davidson motorcycle families, i.e. Sportster, Dyna, VRSC, Softail and Touring, are priced between Rs. 6.95 lakh for the XL883 Sportster and Rs. 34.95 lakh for the top-of-the-line Ultra Classic Electra glide.

Harley Davidson India and ICICI Bank have signed a memorandum of understanding for the bank to offer finance options of up to 85-percent to the company’s customers at a an interest rate of 11-percent for a period of up to five years. So for the entry-level Sportster model, this would mean an EMI of Rs. 12,845 for a five year loan.

According to Sanjay Tripathi, Director (Marketing) Harley-Davidson India, 800cc and above motorcycles is one of the fastest growing segments in India with nearly a thousand units of these ‘big’ bikes sold in 2009 alone. “It has been an overwhelming response on day one of the booking, as people have been waiting for years for these legendary bikes. People who have got themselves registered online will get an opportunity to test ride the bike on invitation and can thereafter book the motorcycle with a minimum payment of Rs. 50,000.”

Deliveries for Haley Davidson bikes will start from June finally allowing enthusiasts in India to “get their motors running and get out on the highway” the way it was originally meant to be.
