The numbers are in. Sales for Harley-Davidson motorcycle dealers were down in January from the previous year, but not to the extent that Wall Street had expected.

According to new research conducted by Milwaukee's Robert W. Baird, dealers reported sales down 10% for January, a number they expect to continue through the rest of the year. While many believe that the economic stimulus provisions enabling tax deductions for new motorcycles will benefit their volume, some dealers are concerned with their individual profit margins. The recent promotion by Harley-Davidson corporate to guarantee the trade-in value for their Sportsters continues to rub the dealers who have sold new motorcycles above MSRP the wrong way.
