New Ro resident crosses Harley ride off her bucket list

NEW ROCHELLE — In 2004, Leslie Howard found out she had the fatal disease pulmonary fibrosis and refused to let the condition bring her down.
"It was one of the best things that's ever happened to me because it got me off my (rear)," she said. "I started living life to the fullest because I know my time here is limited."
Howard, 45, of new Rochelle was doing just that today as she rode a Harley Davidson motorcycle for the first time with the support of over 120 bikers from the tri-state area. Her ride was a part of the traditional bikers' blessing at the new Roc Harley Davidson dealership that signals the start of riding season for dozens of motorcycle clubs in the area.
"We do this every year to give prayers for a safe and happy riding season," said Ken Creary, assistant director of new Rochelle's chapter of the Harley Owner's Group.
The Rev. Biju Peter, pastor of the Blessed Sacrament Church in new Rochelle, lead the bikers in a brief prayer shortly before noon. Decked out in a Harley jacket, Howard saddled up behind new Rochelle resident Armand Gervino on his jet blue 2009 Harley Davidson Road King. the two and over 120 others thundered out of the new Roc Harley parking lot for a roughly 53 mile ride that took them up the Hutchinson, saw mill and Bronx River Parkways as far north as Chappaqua and Armonk and then back down to new Rochelle.
Pulmonary fibrosis causes lung scarring and has no known treatments, cures or even a cause. Howard found out she had the condition through her own research and posted on a Yahoo! Group message board for the disease a list of things she wanted to do before she died. That's how today's Harley ride came about, she said.
"One of the things I wanted to do before I die is ride a Harley," Howard said. "One of the ladies (on the message board) in Illinois read that and set this up for me."
She added she learned most people diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis have a 3- to 5-year life expectancy and she's already exceeded that.
"I think the reason I'm still alive is I have a very positive attitude," she said. "I don't have any stress in my life and I'm doing great."
On April 25, new Roc Harley Davidson will be holding a charity motorcycle event to benefit the Ronald McDonald House of new York. One of the organizers of the event is Shield and Cross of new York, a motorcycle club for police, emergency and armed service personnel in Westchester County. for more information about the benefit, visit www.shieldandcross.org.

The motorcycle is in perfect condition and as much as I like to look at it parked in my garage I would love for it to go to a good home. The 2008 Harley Davidson Sportster for Sale is the 1200 LX model and my asking price is $10,000.00 for this bike that is in beautiful condition only has 374 miles on it.
